Sleep and Snoring Therapy

Do you wake up in the morning feeling exhausted? Has your sleep not been restful for a long time? This may be due to loud snoring combined with pauses in breathing, also known as obstructive sleep apnea.

What causes nighttime breathing pauses?

During sleep, the muscles of the entire body relax, including those in the face and jaw area. As a result, the tongue and lower jaw can shift toward the throat, narrowing it. Air can no longer flow in and out freely. The soft palate begins to vibrate, creating the typical snoring sound. In many cases, this also leads to dangerous pauses in breathing.

Targeted diagnostics with 3D airway analysis

To determine if you have sleep apnea, we can use Digital Volume Tomography to create three-dimensional X-rays if necessary. These allow for a targeted airway analysis, enabling us to tailor your treatment precisely to your needs.

Treatment with a custom dental appliance

As a rule, the problem can be resolved or reduced with the help of a snoring appliance. We take digital impressions of your upper and lower jaw and have custom dental splints made for you. These are connected by adjustable bars and hold the lower jaw in the correct position, keeping the airways as open as possible.

Treatment with aligners for sleep apnea

Simply put, the problem with obstructive sleep apnea is that the volume of the upper airways is too small. If these collapse further during sleep, it leads to dangerous breathing pauses with far-reaching negative health consequences. In other words, there is simply too little space in the mouth and nasal cavity. The goal here is to address the root cause rather than just treating the symptoms.

As part of sleep apnea treatment with aligners, both dental arches are widened. This directly results in an increase in the volume of the throat and upper airways, which can still be adapted—and improved—even in adulthood. This prevents the collapse of the airways and the associated breathing pauses.

An assessment is possible using three-dimensional X-rays, a procedure we offer in our practice. This allows us to clearly diagnose constrictions along the entire length of your airways and decide on the necessary therapy in consultation with colleagues in otolaryngology.
