Jaw Pain / TMD in Idar-Oberstein

Our masticatory system consists of teeth, the jaw, the temporomandibular joints, and the connecting tendons and muscles. Even the slightest changes, such as stress, tension, teeth grinding, or poorly fitting dental prosthetics, can significantly disrupt your bite. This is known as craniomandibular dysfunction (TMD)—a functional disorder of the jaw system.

Typical signs of TMD:

  • Jaw pain, clicking jaw
  • limited mouth opening
  • headaches, unexplained facial pain
  • neck, shoulder, and back discomfort
  • ear noises, tinnitus, dizziness
  • excessive tooth wear
  • teeth grinding

Diagnostics using modern 3D technology

The first step in the diagnostic process is a manual examination: we palpate the muscles for tension and check for any grinding sounds in the temporomandibular joints. In a further step, we can utilize modern technical procedures such as 3D temporomandibular joint analysis (Zebris®). These provide us with information about the position of the jaws in relation to each other and to what extent a positional adjustment is necessary. With the help of an intraoral scanner , we can also identify height differences in the current bite.

Treatment options for TMD

Treatment is usually carried out through splint therapy. This positions the lower jaw correctly, protects the teeth from further wear, and helps relax the masticatory muscles. We also offer TENS treatment (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) . Further treatment options we provide include:

In some cases, follow-up treatment with other specialists or physiotherapists may also be advisable.
